Feeling unmotivated or disconnected from your work, even though you know your work has value? I did. Then, much like my chiropractic visit, I had a business development meeting [last week] for my company and …. bam … the pain of being out of alignment went away.
I was looking at a graph that depicts my process for coaching. There were two points on the graph that were connected, but it wasn’t until I changed their relation to one another did it become clear. I had missed the bullseye in my work: helping others find meaning in their achievement.
By seeing these pieces and how they related, my entire “why” reappeared in a new way.
Yep, the scales fell from eyes. Cue the music! Pop, fiz, guzzle.
Once I saw this, I felt reconnected and highly motivated to crush it.
I don’t want to mix metaphors, but the issue for me wasn’t alignment – it was clarity. When we get clarity on something, it is like x-ray vision; there is a superhuman force multiplier effect that happens. And when we aren’t, we become indecisive, whiny, and negative.
So much about getting what you want from life is about getting clear about it. Think about that.
- I want to lose seven pounds in 4 weeks. My heart rate needs to be 130 beats per min.
- I need to remove the word “like” when I am public speaking.
- I need to ask my partner to use more eye contact when discussing our finances.
- My app is telling me I’ll arrive at 6:12 pm.
Contrast this saying things like, “man – I gotta lose some weight this summer”, or ‘I should be there around dinner time”. I once heard a business coach who is vice president of a prestigious company do a podcast on decisive leadership. He used the word “kinda” multiple times, taking the power out of his intent to sound decisive.
And that’s why the first step toward getting what we need or setting meaningful goals is being really clear on what you want and why.
Telling your wife that she looks “awesome” is one thing, but telling her how you love “her bounce” in those sexy little jean shorts and tight tee will light up a whole different part of the brain’s reward center! [That’s called givin’ mama a shot of Dopamine].
So, over the next several weeks, we are going to take a deep dive specifically into how we can create more meaning in the goals we set.
Punch line? You have to get really specific with goals, intentions, and needs in order for them to translate into reality. And learning how to engage the subconscious mind in these specific thoughts and pictures is a powerful tool to fast track the time to achieve them.
